How to Make your New Year Successful

goal setting

Supposedly, knowing what you want is the easy part, right? For some yes. This can be tricky for others and that’s usual down to a fear on not wanting to get it wrong. My advice, commit to something and know it can evolve along the way. Otherwise, you’d stay where you are for longer than you need to.

The next part to this process is getting what you want, which can feel even more daunting. Like HOW do you go about making what you want happen?

You know what you want (which is usually the opposite of what you have); you can see it, maybe you’ve even started to connect with the feeling of it by daydreaming and experiencing it in your imagination but taking those initial steps can feel like jumping off a cliff with no bloody idea what’s below.

It’s scary to go out and get what you want. And if you want it, you need to get past that.

Pronto.

So, we’re putting a stop to the fear and we’re going to work towards turning that vision board of yours into reality.

Why?

Because you deserve it.

It’s time to stop playing small, stop holding yourself back, and start channelling your wishes, wants and desires into clarity, drive and action to call in exactly what you want this New Year.

Now, if you haven’t already read Why You Need To Bin New Year's Resolutions, to give you a quick overview it dives into the reflective state. Reflecting back on the year you just had, the lessons learnt, what worked, what didn’t and what that means when approaching your new goals.

During your reflections, if you’re doing then with the time and care needed for this kind of work, you’ll probably uncover a few realisations that you might have been avoiding, and let me tell you, these realisations are going to be the driving force behind the change you long for. Change is inevitable, sometimes tricky, and definitely not always sexy.

Change means saying “no” when you want to say “yes” and saying “yes” when you’d rather run in the other direction. It means showing up, being brave, and accepting the emotional ups and downs of not yet being exactly where you want to be.

I often tell my coaching clients that ‘hard’ is a good indicator it’s working, however, that doesn’t mean it always has to feel hard.

Change can be challenging. It’s a great tool for personal growth. It dares you to step up and commit to what’s involved in actively changing.

Which means if you want to become the master of your own destiny, or the master of this New Year, you have to become besties with the concept of change, because change is where the magic happens.

So…if we want to create change, break out of old patterns, and dump the BS from the past year, we have to commit to getting clear on what we want. Right? Right.

Let’s get to it.

Creating lasting change

When reflecting on your past year, what realisations popped up for you?

Creating more fun for yourself? Starting new relationships or ending old ones? Adopting healthier habits or maybe throwing everything up in the air, shouting ‘f*ck it’ from the rooftops and booking a one-way trip to Bali? No judgements here. Been there, done that!

Either way, what did the reflections bring up for you?

Write them down. Type them out… whatever works for you.

Once you have captured them, start considering what these reflections mean and how they’re going to switch up your approach towards this next year, meaning - letting go of old ways, or doing more of the things that light you up.

Once again, capture them. There is something powerful about cognitively writing them down or typing them out.

To help here, when we look at calling in something new or achieving particular goals, we have to consider our most basic needs are met, including safety in the relationships surrounding us, love and connection, stability and certainty in what we’re looking to bring into our lives.

When you can meet your basic needs, you’re able to operate as your best and most productive self, which means aligning your values to what you’re looking to call in and not just calling in something for the sake of it, or because others believe its best for you.

The saying; ‘you do you’; is key here.

Life happens for you, not to you.

It’s time to form a deep belief in yourself and become the most unstoppable version of YOU.

Which means, it’s time to set the wheels in motion.

Understanding yourself and understanding what you truly desire and how you operate can feel like the most empowered, levelled up version of you is taking control of the wheel.

If you believe you’re capable of the change or the desire you’re looking to create or call in, you’ll do the work to see the result. However, if you don’t believe you can, you’ll end up finding every excuse in the book and blame obstacles along the way.

“Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.” - Henry Ford

Take your lessons from the previous year to make things better for yourself. You don’t need to settle and you’re so much more capable of creating life on your terms than you likely give yourself credit for.

And with the right self-awareness, support, and tools it can be a simple process to follow until completion… like an IKEA flatpack, frustratingly fiddly at times, halfway through if feels like it’s never going to resemble the picture in the instructions, but the end result is a masterpiece of your own creating… even if you did need to rehash a few bits!

Get clear on what you want, write it down and create your own IKEA manual to walk you towards those goals.

You’re brilliant, own it.

Seriously you are.

I’ll remind you again, you’re so much more capable of creating life on your terms than you give yourself credit for. Everything you wish and desire for in this New Year can come to fruition, it’s whether you’re willing to commit to the work needed.

Creating a life that you want don’t come from sitting back and going with the flow. It comes from getting clear on what you want and going the hell after it. And keeping going till you get to where you want to be.
