3 Steps To Become More Accountable

goal setting

Humans are creatures of habit. And when it comes to creating change and becoming the best versions of ourselves, we’re inevitably going to face some roadblocks as we let go of old patterns and behaviours that no longer serve us and take on new beliefs and habits that support us in making that change, we so long for. The defining factor between those that achieve what they want and those that don’t is a commitment to progress over perfection and not stopping at the first hurdle.

We all have the excuses:

I don’t have time.

I can’t do XYZ.

It’s not the right time.

I have too much on my plate right now.

I don’t know if I want it that much anyway.

And whilst it doesn’t lessen the blow of not achieving what you set out to achieve, it gives you a justification as to why you aren’t pursuing what you desire.

And I call BS on that.

Most of our excuse relate to not having time. But we prioritise what we deem important.

“Time is a created thing. To say, ‘I don’t have time’ is to say ‘I don’t want to.’” – Lao Tzu

Liberate yourself from this BS and just be honest with yourself if it’s not something you’re motivated by or want to prioritise. That’s okay. But don’t lie to yourself under the construct of not having time.

So, with that out the way and time not being a reason to not do something…

It’s time to round up your hype squad, put your big girl pants on, grab your pom-poms and get TF on with these goals you want for yourself.

Set yourself up for success with the following steps to achieve ultimate accountability.

1.   Who you surround yourself with matters

Motivational speaker, Jim Rohn, said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.

Makes sense.

If you’re constantly surrounded by people looking to pull you away from your goals and the life you want to lead, you’re going to fail.

But if you choose to surround yourself with those who empower you, support your vision and goals and are also on the trajectory of becoming the best version of themselves, you’re going to feel comfortable amongst a team of epic humans.

My hype squad is essential, they’re my best of friends and incredibly empowering individuals who will never judge me when I say no, will pull me up when I should be stepping up to the mark and who will cheer me on like no other when I start actualising my vision board.

First step:

Audit your community.

2.   Find your human

Now you’ve audited your community and chosen your hype squad, it’s time to hone in on that one person you can trust to hold you accountable.

Someone who can hold you accountable will speed up the rate of success to achieving your goals, BUT there’s a catch.

It can’t just be anybody.

It needs to be someone you trust; respect and you don’t want to disappoint. No, they are not here to hold judgement or create guilt if you fall off the path for a moment or two, but they’re honest and will seek feedback from you to check in.

If you don’t have anybody in your hype squad you necessarily want to use as an accountability partner, this is the perfect opportunity to make a financial commitment to yourself and hiring a coach or a mentor to support you.

Making a financial commitment adds an extra mental layer of accountability. You don’t pay for a gym membership and never use it, so why would you pay for a coach and never lean on them?

Hiring someone who can support you in hitting your goals whilst providing you guidance, reassurance and accountability is the fastest way to creating the life you want.

Second step:

Find your spokesperson.

3.   Being honest is hard but vital

Finally, create a space where honesty comes first.

Honesty with yourself and where you are on your journey.

Honesty with those around you.

Honesty with your goals and whether they align with your values.

And honesty with the person you choose to invest in to support you on your path to the best version of YOU.

Remember, no one is perfect, even if Instagram makes you believe they are.

Setbacks happen.

But the commitment you’re making to yourself means showing up as honestly as possible, getting back on track, forgiving your minor detour, and putting in the hard work.

Goals are easy to write down, but they require the work.

Honesty is key.
